THESE ARE THE 12 IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS YOU NEED TO POSSESS ……
1. LISTEN AND RESPOND
Always listen before you respond. Your team should have the confidence that their views will be patiently listened to before taking decisions.
2. RESPECT
Respect your employees and be courteous to them, never mind the positions they are in.
3. CONFIDENCE
For the message to reach across, it is important that we sound confident. And confidence comes from conviction in what we say. A strong voice has a great impact. The strength stems from the belief and heart behind the message and not the tone alone.
4. ABILITY TO NEGOTIATE
Learn the art of negotiation. There will be difference of opinions, interpersonal issues, resistance on ideas, but learn to negotiate and make people buy your point of view rather than enforcing it.
5. READY TO DELEGATE
The art of a great leader is delegating work to others. If you want to be an effective leader, assign work to others rather than doing all by your own. Your focus should be more on strategic planning, providing overall directions and training for your team rather than micro managing.
6. MORE VISIBLE AND LESS ACCESSIBLE
As a leader you should be more visible around your team but less accessible. It should not be like anyone can walk into your room and have a discussion when they want. Others should not drive your agenda.
7. CLEAR COMMUNICATION
Should be a good communicator. You can achieve desired results only if you can properly communicate the vision and directions to your team. Words have the power to make people do the unimaginable. Be a strong communicator.
8. DECISION-MAKER
Should be able to take wise and tough decisions. A great leader always thinks hard before taking a decision and also listens to others’ opinions as well. He frames his own decisions and once taken, sticks on to it. People should look up to you for decisions when the going gets tough.
9. MASTER OF YOUR ART
Should be a master in what you do. People will follow you only if they trust you. People will respect you and take your points of view only if they find that you are knowledgeable in your field of expertise.
10. READINESS TO SUPPORT
Support people if they are in need. Be it personal or professional. Make them feel that you are there to take care.
11. HONESTY
Ethics and values are very important for a leader. If you want your team to be honest and have ethics, then you should live those yourself.
12. VISION AND PURPOSE
Good leaders not only have clear vision and clear directions to achieve the vision, but also communicate clearly the vision and purpose to their team. A true leader never goes back or rethinks on his vision, but stays patiently and strongly to achieve it given any situation.
