Did we know that reading reduces 68% of the stress? A study conducted by the University of Sussex shows that reading for even six minutes can reduce our stress levels. This is because when we are lost in a book, we stay away from the distraction in our lives, which in turn promotes inner peace enhancing overall health.
Reading is not choosing any article we like and just going through it. It is a multifaceted process where we recognise the word and comprehend it to understand its meaning. It helps us grow mentally, socially, emotionally and psychologically, expanding our knowledge and opening the door to a vast ocean of knowledge.
READING BUILDS THE WEB OF KNOWLEDGE
Reading is like a spider’s web; we connect what we read to different things that we already know and learn new possibilities. As William Penn says, “Knowledge is the treasure of a wise man”, reading adds to this valuable treasure. Books are rich source of information. Every time we read; we learn something new. The more we read, the more we know about the different people and their experiences. It helps to explore the right and wrong; understand the different perspectives of authors; paves way for us to write about things by ourselves when we comprehend and retain what we read.
READING IMPROVES FOCUS & CONCENTRATION
From access to addiction, digital devices have made a great impact on our life. We spend most of our day surfing, chatting, watching videos and playing games. Certainly, we are losing our focus and becoming impatient. A common conviction is that reading improves our focus. Does it?
Indeed! Reading books is one of the constructive habits that improves our concentration and live in the present. Research has shown that reading concentration improves when a person reads at least about 30 minutes per day. It is also recommended by the University at Albany that a student reads 15-20 minutes a day after his/her school hours to improve focus and concentration.
READING MOTIVATES AND ENHANCES SKILLS
Life is full of ups and downs. There are times we feel discouraged and desperate, trying to give up things. Reading an inspirational book is a ray of sunshine that changes the way we think, pushes us towards the right direction and transforms our lives positively. Reading has the potential to increase the thinking and communication skills tremendously. When we read a mystery, we always predict the next events. We analyse the situation and think of alternative ways to solve the mystery before reading the entire story. This brain-stimulating activity enlightens our mind, makes us more empathetic towards others and enriches good command over the language, boosting communication skills.
The habit of reading regularly fosters higher order thinking skills, promotes optimistic attitude and helps one to become a better human being, as we read about life from others. “Books are a uniquely portable magic.” -Stephen King. Let us carry the magic wherever we go! Start reading books and make them your companion!
Haven’t you started reading yet? NOW is the best time to start reading! Happy Reading!!!
